Canon 300d - any suggestions for software to use for imaging

Recommended Posts

Hi

Further to my previous thread can I ask any current 300d users what software you use (especially to control the shutter etc). I'm having major problems getting software to recognise my camera so starting to wonder if there is a camera fault. So if I could try out something that DEFINITELY should work I may have an answer (even if its one I don't want ...)

Thanks

Canon EOS utility works with all Canon EOS cameras. I have a 300D and it works fine with it. You can download the upgrade from Canon if you do not have the original CD and then apply a small registry hack to make it work.

Once installed plugging the camera in a USB interface will cause the camera remote control panel to pop up.

For long exposures over 30s you need a serial shutter release. There are commercial products available, or you can make one yourself if you are comfortable soldering a few components. You can then use APT or Backyard Eos to set up an a sequence so that multiple subs can be taken with little intervention from the user.

Commercial - http://www.astronomiser.co.uk/300d.htm

APT - http://www.ideiki.com/astro/

Neither BEOS or APT support the 300D.

Thanks guys, getting there now - got the canon utility working with the hack and camera communicating !! Interesting I had to change the 'communication' setting to normal and not ptp also. I think that's also my issue trying to use software not supporting DIGIC1

That's right you need normal mode. I think PTP is for using the camera with standard twain scanner drivers.

Glad you are up and running. I find the Canon suite very useful but the remote control utility for the 300D/350D has some irritating idiosyncrasies. If you ever get a 1000D or something you will find the remote control utility is a lot better.
