Slow azimuth motor speed with new Celestron 8 SE

Recommended Posts

I just bought a new Celestron 8 SE. I instantly noticed the azimuth motor was way slower than the altitude, even test to check that. It took 1 min 24 sec to complete 180º with the azimuth motor, which means the actual azimuth speed is 2.14º/sec. On the other hand, it took 25 sec to complete 90º with the altitude motor, which means the actual altitude speed is 3.6º/sec.

So both azimuthal and altitude speed are way lower that what Celstron says !! But what bothers me is that a lot of people experienced problems with their motors, especially the azimuth. So does it mean I could have a defective motor ? I would appreciate if some other Celstron SE users could report their speed values in this post before I get in touch with Celstron tech support. Thanks!!
