how to get started

Hi Guys

How do i get started in astrophotography i'm a bit confused with some of the terms i have been reading though the forums and from what i can tell some use long exposures some take multiple images and "stack" them with "dark frames ??? " is that right or have i got it all wrong (knowing me it will be the latter )

i have a Nikon d3000

Have tried to take some pictures last night about 2am 30 sec exposure on iso 1600 and its all orangy which i gather is Light Pollution see attached

Is there a step by step guide to get good results available ?

any help muchly appreiated
