I wouldn't go for a pair of 10x50 binoculars for an 8 year old, I found them too heavy when I was that age and I could never hold them steady enough to see anything because of my arms shaking. I got given a 60mm achromat when I was 7 and much preferred that to the binoculars even though the tripod was really flimsy. I reckon something like the Skywatcher Mercury would be a lot better.
