It sure is....IF you use it for its intended purpose...WIde Field.

Last year I had is cleaned and colimated but Scientifics Online (1 of the 2 companies that Edmund Scientitics was split into).....the cost was a mere USD 75 (+shipping). I also opted to get a Red Dot finder (factory-)installed at the same time.

Interestingly, the "part" that Edmunds Scientifc was split into is Edmund Optics, and to this day, they still manufacture the original RKE eyepieces.

You are right about the past, however I actually enjoy my scopes even more now, after all I have acquired them twice now 😊

10 years ago I went thru very difficult times...and had to sell all my equipment (Takahashi, Questar, Celestron and Canon).....only scope I didnt sell was my Edmund Astroscan.

Starting again was not difficult.....but re-acquiring equipment was not cheap though😉

There are some great Bortle 2 areas when you’re away from Lerwick and the other villages (and in the north the Sullom Voe terminal and gas plant is a major light polluter).

If coming by ferry from Aberdeen I suggest you book well in advance as it can be difficult to get a cabin and a vehicle, it’s not a pleasant 14 hour overnight journey without a cabin!

Unfortunately the problem vanished w/o me doig anything.

I once complained aboutr a strange noice from at A/C unit at a building just opposite my bedroom window. After spending hours on tracking down who was responsible for the maintenance and even pursuading home to call a technician....when the technician showed the next afternoon - the noice had dissapeared.......

True...in the sense that if I (attempt) to observe from within the very city center of Copenhagen, then the level of light polution is on par with the all of the greater London area. Since Copenhagen is a LOT smaller than London area-wise, it doesn´t take much effort got get at least one better on better on the Bortle Scale.

I am in the outskirts of Copenhagen, and luckily my balcony faces SSW - towards the straight between Denmark and Sweden, so for planets I am fine....as well as Deep Sky Astrophotogry (obviously with filters).

That said.....I have actually seen some deep-sky objects from the Round Tower in Copenhagen. This tower has an interesting history....altought it´s part of the Church of Trinitatis, it never served as a Church tower, but was specifically built by Christian IV as an Observatory for the University of Copenhagen and was inaugurated as such at 1642 (but got it´s first telescope on

Fun facts:

Jean Picard visited the observatory in 1671 - although is actual purpose was to establish the actuel precise georgaphical location of Tycho Braha´s old observatoy at the island of Hveen (located in the straight between Denmark and Sweden, which he visited together with Ole Rømer - who then became Picard´s assistant from 1672 until 1681

Ole Rømer was became the Director of the observatoy in 1685 - but his famous discovery of the speed of light was done in paris in 1676.

Although the it losts it´s status as observatoy of the University of Copenhagen in 1861,  it continued as a observatoty nonetheless, and is still active today, but with 6" Mertz which were installed in 1929.  It is claimed to be the oldest, still active, observatory in the world. (Paris established 1671 and Greenwich 1675)

After years on CN & Astromart + the danish astronet.dk, I guess it´s high time I get more active here...especially asI am now travelling to the UK more frequently.

Being 58, but out of "business" for 20 years, I have bounced back over the last to year....having rebuilt my telescope collection and started observing again.

Looking forward to be part of this community.

I keep getting the "Accept Cookies" "option", but when I accept, the "option" pops up again. (I am using Firefox)

As I would definately bring a scope, I wonder if you could suggeest a few places for accomodation outside of Lerwick or, if you could point be to a good ressource?
