YouCannotBeSirius
Last night 4 of us saw a blue meteor. In the North, fairly mid-low on the horizon, about 12.30am. The blue was very vivid, like the colour in my signature. I've seen plenty of meteors but never one like this, it was a nice sight. Is this a common occurrence? Is the colour typical of meteors? Just wondering really as it was interesting.
YouCannotBeSirius
I read a while ago that the colour of a meteor can be determined by the chemical compounds it contains, and that blue suggests Barium, Copper (which also produces green), Calcium, Halite. I've seen meteors with faint colouring but this meteor was strikingly blue.
YouCannotBeSirius
Additional info: it wasn't a 'fireball' it was a meteor like those seen in any standard meteor shower. In case that helps...
Cygnus_X1
I've never seen a blue meteor, but I have seen several fireballs that were a vivid green colour. I've also seen a fireball that started out white explode into lots of orange coloured fragments.
YouCannotBeSirius
Sounds cool.I saw a fireball once, it was so clear that we could literally see the rock breaking apart into pieces in the atmosphere and burning up. It was amazing.I've done some research on this blue meteor and haven't found much.
starman1969
A blue meteor, very nice. I have seen mostly green, or greeny white + one or two red meteors.
YouCannotBeSirius
Yep, it was unlike any other meteor I've seen, which are mostly white-ish, the odd orange-y one. As it happens I don't recall ever seeing a green-ish one yet.
