Which telescope is better? Atlas Explorer/Bresser Skylux NG

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have a Bresser Skylux NG reflector which was from Lidl a couple of years ago. It's 700mm focal length, 70mm diameter.

My friend has offered me her old Atlas Explorer reflector, which has 900mm focal length and 114mm diameter.

Would the Atlas be an upgrade from the Bresser? I don't know much about what kind of numbers are best. Also, would the eyepieces from the Bresser work with the Atlas? I'm not sure what eyepieces she has.

Thanks for any advice :)

Hi surrounded, Welcome to SGL :)

The Atlas should give you brighter images/show you fainter objects because of its larger (114mm) aperture. Whether it is any better depends on the quality of its mirror and other optics.

Eyepieces (EPs), generally, come in three standard barrel sizes: 2" (usually premium), 1.25" (commonest) and 0.965" (very uncommon). Whether they would be interchangeable between the two 'scopes depends upon them both sharing the same standard - my *guess* is that they'd both accept 1.25" EPs.

If it's free, I'd say why not? If it's cheap, could be worth a punt... can you try before you buy?

HTH
