data storage whilst taking images?

Do people stora data whilst taking the image directly onto a CF card or onto a laptop?

From the 12Dstring site, say you take an image of M31 which on his image he used 21 x 120sec subs how much data roughly is that?

I use an SD card to store the data, although now I'm shooting tethered, it's also downloaded to the laptop. The data size is not really dependent on the sub length, just the number of subs (although the amount of data captured per sub, can have an effect on the overall file size). How big is the raw file size of the 20d ? That's approx what each of the 21 subs would be.
