Goto upgrade for 150P on EQ3-2

Recommended Posts

I already have the Sky Watcher Eq3-2 with a dual axia motor pack added but i am now thinking i wish i had splashed out on the full goto pack with handset....

What are my options now to upgrade considering i already have the motors can i just attach the handset and off i go ?????

:D

From what I could find the goto is sold as a complete upgrade including motors, controller and handset for £300 ( Synscan GOTO Upgrade Kit | Telescope Accessories | Rother Valley Optics )

Having said that, the cost for a complete tripod, EQ3-2 mount with the goto fitted, and tripod is only £399, so for £99 more than just the upgrade you get a complete new mount and tri-pod - silly really !! (http://www.rothervalleyoptics.co.uk/new-eq3-pro-synscan-mount_d3699.html)

You could then sell your current EQ-3 with dual motors for £120-£150

In that case you should be able to get more...

But if you can get a new EQ3-2 mount for £160 and the dual axis drives are £90 - so my guess would be £160 - £180 would be a fare price second hand.

If the scope / mount is only two weeks old it's a shame you didn't opt for the goto in the first place - works out a lot cheaper

I think you`d need new motors, can you imagine how long it would take the normal dual axis ones to `GoTo` anything - You`d pick your DSO then go inside for a cuppa or two - I think the Synscan motors pack a bit more punch - at least I hope they would!:D

I would just stick with the dual motors.

The EQ3-2 isn't that big and the 150P is probably as big as the EQ3-2 will handle and having motors that cost substantially more then the mount seems a little ill placed.

I would suspect that at some time you could be looking for an EQ5 or HEQ5 for greater stability and I would suggest putting the money to one side for then.

The issue is that there's so many EQ3-2's kicking around. Even after the recent price jump the mount is only £100 more than buying the OTA on it's own and people want to upgrade after a while to a bigger mount so they are around often. Bare in mind the kinds of buyers for them second hand aren't normally new starts but people either upgrading themselves (and wanting to do so cheaply) or people with HEQ5's and upwards wanting something light and easy sitting alongside a larger set up as more of an impulse buy.

Mine's going on the market next month, granted, no motors but it has a polar scope and I'd struggle to shift it at any price past £100.
