Luke,

you hit the head on the nail!!

Every time we take an astro image it should be checked for possible new nova, variable stars, minor planets etc etc.

Seems a wasted opportunity if we don't.:hello2:

Merlin, I sometimes manually compare my images with the ESO online digitized sky survey, but it's a bit amaturish and very time consuming! Is there a (cheap) way of doing this automatically (presumably by a sort of blink comparator)?

In the bad ol' days of film I actually made a blink comparitor!

Nowadays the Real Sky images and a software package like AstroArt V4 ( I think all the usual suspects can do the same -Maxim etc) can be configured for "blinking".
