Moon with barlow that didn't seem necessary but worked better??

A mosaic using C11 with a 2x barlow and Canon 450D.

I shouldn't really need the barlow I guess with prime focus focal length of 2.8 m!!

But strangely it seemed to come out quite a bit sharper with the barlow?! So I tiled about a dozen shots at F20!

My best guess at the mo is that when zoomed the exposure time is longer and seems to cause a little less camera shake - even with mirror lock on I seem to get some shake with the very fast exposures, though this is only a guess??
