How much better is a QHY5 over an SPC900

I've been struggling finding guide stars with my SPC900 through an ST80, couldn't find anything near M31 last night at all. My ST80 doesn't have rings and I'm confined to just some lateral movement at the scope end.

My question is in the subject really - can I expect a QHY5 to be much better?

Is it a modded SPC900 David ? I'm using a QHY5v, so closer to the SPC900 in sensor size, and I've never had an issue finding a guide star. I've not had any luck with my non modded SPC900 even finding a guide star

No it's not modded, and that's something I've wondered about doing. With the long exposure mod does PHD and the like 'see through' the camera whilst it's in long exposure mode and does this work better than frame based? I'm happy to get the soldering iron out and save some money if it is

I've heard it works better with the LX mod... I've not modded mine though... I do mean to at some point.
