My first telescope

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

just wanted to say that i have now set up my first telescope and i am now hoping for some clear nights

It is only a cheap 76mm newtonian with a 700mm focal length.

I can't wait to see some amazing things, although i don't really know what i am going to be able to see through it.

I am new to astronomy, so i expect anything will be amazing to me.

Congratulations !.

As 1st targets I'd suggest:

- the moon

- the Pleiades cluster

- the stars Mizar and Alcor in the handle of the Plough (Ursa Major)

- Jupiter (early evening object now)

- Saturn (after midnight but rising earlier and earlier)

- Orions belt and sword area including the great nebula Messier 42

If you have not already done so, download the Stellarium software - it will show you where and when to look for these objects.

Stick to low magnifications to start with (the eyepiece with the highest number of mm !) and only use more if the view looks really crisp.

Have fun !

I've got a 76mm reflector, and another target I'd suggest is M31, the Andromeda Galaxy. It's only a steak with a bright centre, but when you begin to comprehend the size an the distance it is truly mind blowing.

Good luck!

Tom
