Hi Paul,

You can reduce the brightness down to a more comfortable level with a mild Neutral Density filter (like a moon filter but less dark) or something like the Baader Planetarium 'Neodymium Moon & Skyglow' filter which has the added benefit of filtering out some of the light pollution and enhancing surface detail on the planets. 

For a quick and cheap fix, use an old pair of sunglasses!  You could always remove the lens from the eye that isnt used for viewing.
