M31 - Compare DSS and Nebulosity

Recommended Posts

I was out New Year's Eve with my new F/4 Newtonian. Trying to see how much advantage F/4 gave me over my C8 at F/6.3

I was pleased with the initial results which were stacked in DSS and tweaked in Nebulosity. But after reading some posts here about grey results from DSS (and mine were too) I decided to extract TIF's from my RAW files (Nebulosity does not work with Nikon RAW files) and stack them in Nebulosity. I then processed in the usual way - tweaking the Levels, Curves, Colour.

I was stunned (by my own humble standards, you understand) to see the difference. Here is my first M31 stacked in DSS

Below is the same stack (but extracted to TIF's this time) and run through Nebulosity

These are 7x60 sec unguided at ISO 3200. I think Nebulosity is my new best processing pal ... :)
