Which Single Filter

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Just need a quick and dirty answer, which single filter can i get to cover all the following, its doesnt matter if its not 100% perfect for the requirement.

  1. Back Garden with light polution to look at DSO.
  2. Dark skies to look at nebula/galaxy detail.

I have been looking at Castell and Skywatcher UHC/Oiii

Same advice from me too. I find they help with the sodium lights at home, just darken the background sky a little to help pick out the faint stuff. The Neodymium is also a good planetary filter. And great with the DSLR for imaging short subs. So a proper jack of all trades, just what you were after.

Can't do it all with one filter. For all kind of emission nebulae, UHC. For planetaries, more magnification if you're in light polluted environment. For galaxies, usually a dark site ad/or more magnification, and possibly (if the light pollution soup is inescapable and the object is large or very faint) an Omega Optical GCE or Lumicon Deep-Sky.

The only thing the UHC is good at for galaxies is making arms more prominent in already visible face-on spirals and making HII-regions more prominent.
