Things to look for facing North?

Hey all,

Clear (albeit literally freezing) night due this evening. I'm in the UK and was wondering if you have any recommendations for things to look for. Due to the position of the house I am restricted to facing north with a 90o field of view either side, so I guess I can see directly East and West, but nothing beyond that! I saw Andromeda last night (as a smudge of light!) but I'm not too sure what else to look for!

If you guys could give me a couple of things in that direction to look out for, it'd be greatly appreciated!

Most obvious ones are M81 and M82.

Also M97, M108 and M101

Are you using a telescope, binoculars or just your eyes?

I would go for all the clusters around cassiopeas which is to the north but high up in the evenings. So try the owl cluster NGC457, the perseus double cluster NGC 869 etc.

Some great open clusters in the constellation Auriga - M36, M37 and M38. Try looking for M1 (Crab Nebula) in Taurus later on in the evening. That would be a real prize. See if you can split the double star Castor in Gemini.
