Probably less than what I paid for it - total cost on insurance which covers the whole lot is £5,000

You've managed to get insurance :) ???

Every time I've inquired, there have been so many exclusions (it's not insured while out of the house ..., or while being transported ... ) and the excesses and premiums have been so high that it just seemed pointless. Maybe I've been trying the wrong places (generally as additions to household policies)

I am in a different position to most because I'm a 'propfessional amateur' but at least 4 times what I paid for my (modest) new car... And that is with quite a bit bought used...

Stone me, I wish you hadn't asled!!!

But there is an amateur near me with a robotic setup that must have topped a hundred grand, UK prices.

I've just done a quick count up - really hope that my wife doesn't read this...

About £4650 (some very rough figures), but I'm sure there is plenty I've missed so it's probably about right - I've used new prices (or what I paid if the item isn't available any more like the 300D).

new prices would be very scary - about seven times what I paid for my 'cheapo runabout end of life car' - my wife has the decent car which gives me brownie points for astro gear!. but between a half and two thirds of that cost as it's mostly used gear.

the good thing is that if you buy well and look after your gear, there's always a market to sell it into.

insurance, now that's another point. maybe I should start hiding my EPs at night / during the day.

I wondered if you'd reply to this Kev, how many lenses does that 15K cover, 2 or 3? :)

I'd love that 600mm L but I'm making do with my Sigma 170-500mm APO.

Current prices on the Canon lens is:

600mm f4L £7k

400mm f2.8L £6k

200mm f1.8L - obselete now but I bought it for £2.5k s/h

even the 24mm f1.4L MkII was £1300 so the £15k is a bit light, I might have to recheck my insurance cover lol

Thats one L of a crop of lenses Kev......very nice indeed.
35 years of photography and you do tend to collect some nice toys lol. It will be no different from the passionate astronomers on here, they will have a lot of equipment that may not be used daily but it could be used.

Totally agree, luckily for me I dont really need the big lenses as most of what I image is widefield. Now I have the Sigma APO I might have a crack at some nature photography and with 40 acres of woodland behind me there is plenty of wildlife to go and image.

I just totalled up everything I've owned astro wise and I nearly fell off my chair.

Actually in answer to the question about insurance thats the kit valuiation on the house insurance - insuring the hardware for out of the house has been impossible.

This has all been covered before on here but when I tried to get insurance my home contents people said 'sure - of course - no worries' when I called to check they said 'no no no - not telescopes - we will cover cameras and things you might reasoably use outside of the house (mobile phones, laptop computers etc) but not a telescope - too big a risk - sorry'

I have been through this with about a dozen home insurers - they all big it up on the sales piucth when you ask them to sign off a manifest of kit as being 'all risks covered' they suddenly get windy and climb down. It does kind of surpise me they will cover a £3k camera no worries but not a telescope - I mean if something is stealable a camera is a lot easier to steal, drop, lose then a meter long telescope and 30kg of mounting.

So I set off and called up a a few peopole who advertise in the Astronomy mags (Glover and Howe was one) who said 'Telescopes - yessiree thats our business, been in it for 250 years blah blah blah but when I sent off and asked for a qoute theysaid 'ooohhh telescopes - expensive - ok we'll insure £5000 for £1500 a year on the proviso that when they are out of the house they stay in a locked car - no accidental damage cover and for the kit in a field hahahahaha - no chance'

I have since tried two other 'specialised' brokers one of whome would cover the kit for a mere £500 a year but only on the proviso I spend about £10k on alarms, locks and chains and never take the kit outside of the house. I am considering offerin g my own telescope insurance on these terms - ie I;ll insure all of your kit for £300 a year so long as its stays locked in a bank vault - seems like a good business to be in really. I'll cover risks so long as there arent any.

On the whole pointless - so the kit is insurade as an excess on the household policy so if the flat burns down I am covered but for outside use the kit is essentially uninsured.
