Have a look at this;

SO many people try to explain this simple process but this guy has got it off to perfection because he shows you how to define your N.S.E.W. co-ordinates without ambiguity in any optical system.

I think this is the best I've yet seen and really don't see how it could be improved.

North-South determination is easier if you just tap the tube. Tap it towards South and wherever the star appears to go, that's North.

You can replace the expensive eyepiece with a cheap webcam and "Al's reticle" software that puts crosshairs on your image preview.

In the real world - how long does it take to do if you are a beginner? and how long once you've had some practice?

Half an hour? Depends how good you want it. For twenty minute subs in Ha with a long focal length it has to be GOOD!
