Not much of a success - help!

I tried to snap Jupiter tonight. The seeing was really good even for the light pollution we have here so I thought I'd give it a go even though I have no idea what I'm doing!

I have a Canon EOS 40D camera and a Skywatcher 200P on an HEQ5 Pro mount.

I was in a rush as I thought clouds were coming over so I did a simple 2 star align, which I know isn't enough, but I thought Jupiter was so bright the exposure wouldn't need to be too long. Too darn right! Burn out on all of them, even at 1 sec. I took the ISO down to 200 from 800 and still burn out. Maybe I should have taken them at 1/2 sec or less.

What do I need to do to get good pics of Jupiter?

I would suggest that the exposure needs to be a lot less. Start at 1/30 and gradually decrease the exposure and see which gives the best results.

Generally a webcam is the weapon of choice with planets, as you can get hundreds/thousands of frames (at 10fps - 60fps).

1/2 a second is way to long...
