The cycling forum (cyclechat.net) where I waste spend rather a lot of my time, has just had a poll posted up, about a news item on councils scaling back street lights 'to save money'. The poll asked, do you think this is a good idea?

I was reading a the talking heads bit on a Daily Mail *cough* article on said subject - with most people applauding the switch off, citing that it will get rid of the "hoodies" who congregate under the lamposts outside their homes.

Yep, read that as well - the bulk of the article was how about how light reduction would lead to a rise in crime and police warning this would be the case. Meanwhile on the same webpage an amazing picture from the Massi Mara of the night sky near another article with an image of Europe from space with the proud headline that London's lights are the brightest!
