At the risk of sounding like a terminal anorak...

I'd just like to point out 1/4" UNC & 1/4" Whitworth threads aren't QUITE the same.

Both are 1/4" dia with 20 threads per inch (TPI) but UNC has a 60deg thread angle, Whitworth- 55 deg.

I SUSPECT it won't make any practical difference, but i'm not SURE- & I wouldn't want anyone damaging the tripod threads on their expensive cameras.

If there are any engineers in the house, please speak up now!

there's another link if your happy to go with UNC:

I'm still working on the Whitworth!

Not wishing to confuse folk here but , yes they are slightly different as described. However, in my recent searches in a similar vain ,it would seem that modern tripod screws and the female part in cameras these days would be a 1/4"-20 UNC or in some cases a 3/8"-16, not the old 1/4" Whitworth English stnd :)
