I don't know if the admins will allow this but I can try. If not please move or remove.

There is a proposal to sell of half of the Country's forests.

Ministers plan huge sell off of Britain's forests - Telegraph

All sounds so reasonable. Eh ? But think, who will buy it and are they really going to allow us to play on thier new land or take our scopes out ? Of all the dark places I visit, the majority are held by the Forestry commision on our behalf.

If you so wish, please take the time to petition the Government at

Stop Uk Forestry Destruction petition

Anyone for Kielder or Dalby star parties ?

Dave.

Well I hope everyone hasn't forgotten to sign the petition.....outrageous.

Btw, maybe now is a good time to get involved to try and make things better rather than jumping ship in a parasitic fashion.

Stirring apathy is the problem....(oops I feel a PM from the mods coming so I'll shut up)

Bad news, guys, very bad news.

There's about 300 acres of forest ten minutes' walk from my house - which is invariably private and is only used for a month a year for pheasant shoots. The rest of the year it is left.

The wood is extremely verdant, with rich carpets of bluebells, primroses and violets in the spring and rich Autumnal colours coming from huge varieties of trees.

Yet not one member of the public is allowed to walk in it - the gameskeeper will approach anyone who seems to be walking towards the forest and warns you that it is private.

I have been using a stunning hill route by the edge of a forest for six years without provocation, when another gameskeeper told me I wasn't allowed in those fields. He was waiting at the gate at the bottom of the hill. It took a long time to get over that one. :)

Granted, I wouldn't want to tresspass on somebody's garden, but when it comes to hundreds of acres, nay thousands, denied to the public, I personally feel upset about this. I know the laws of the countryside, I was raised in the countryside and have great respect for the local flora, fauna, don't do wild camping, and in the time when I was a dog owner, kept him on a lead when livestock were present. however I haven't owned a dog for many years now.

Conversely, I work on an estate and the estate owner is incredibly generous with their land - many miles of public footpaths through ancient forests, with tastefully created laminated maps by gates with suggested routes - with the blessing to enjoy it. Alas, these gems are few and far between........

In other news, the Forestry Commission (who has been struggling financially in recent years) recently sold a large hill forest in the county I live in to a private owner who wants to use the trees for "biofuel" - the locals are trying to legalise the footpaths that have been used for 50 years (apparently you can legalise unclaimed publically used footpaths if you can prove thay have beed used for a certain amount of years), but he has threatened to block the paths if they try.

I sincerely hope that there are more landowners out there like the one I work for. Nevertheless, this is not enough for me to have faith in the privitisation of our countryside, I am going to sign the petition. :(

I thought Forestry Comission land belonged to all of us. The old cliche that we're just caretakers of our land for our descendents holds true.

More selling off of the family silver for short-term fixes.

Erm, Britain's trespass laws allow you to walk where you want ( within reason) and as long as you are doing no damage and leave everything as it is you can go where you want.

Edit: Scotland's trespass laws - lol my bad. Unlucky England.

Pity you give guys in down South don't have a Freedom To Roam act or possibly a Right of Access. In Scotland we do ( there's NO law of trespass up here ! )

I have signed the petition. Folk need to stand together on topics like this , whether they live in the city or the sticks. If they don't , well . it's the thin end of the wedge.

Scotlands Highlands were covered by forests in the 17th centuary, after a certain General Wade got involved , we lost our forests to a greater degree.

Please don't let this happen to you guys. Forests don't grow over night.

Clear Skies

Pete

Yes please!!!

..... but I'm sure that you don't want a load of Brits arriving seeking a better life, do you? :) At least we'd get our own back from when your ancestors came to our island seeking a better life...:(:)

So if it belongs to all of us, aren't we supposed to get a share?

I don't want a share, even if one was available. It belongs to all of us. Or is that too 'socialist' for today's world.

It's all about knowing the price of everything but the value of nothing. Short-term profit for some, but long-term loss for the rest of us.
