A 'new' Saturn theory

Not sure if it's been mentioned or if this is the right place but it's an interesting theory.

Just actually came up on the BBC site so seemed relevant to post.

BBC News - Giant moon collision 'may have formed Saturn's rings'

But I'm surprised nobody has come up with this before hand. Seems an obvious one to think about.

Personally I think it could just be a build up of many smaller satellites over many many years.

I'm sure I've heard that theory before, probably on Brian Cox's Wonders programme when he talks about the rings.

"Personally I think it could just be a build up of many smaller satellites over many many years."

Could be, but wouldn't that mean all the gas giants would have them? Or that it just so happened that there was a bigger concentration of satellites and debris in Saturn's vicinity for it to pull in.
