Sun 2 Oct in H-alpha

The sun was putting on a nice display yesterday. Images were taken through high level cloud and mediocre seeing.

Sunspots AR1109 and AR1110 looked brilliant with lots of surface activity. AR 1111 was weaker but still clearly visible.

A Lunt60 H-alpha scope and skynyx 2.1 mono camera. A nice balance between cost and results. If budget allowed...I would adopt the Swedish 1m Solar Telescope (SST).

Sheri, forgive what might be a stupid question, but why are Pete Lawrences images orange whereas yours are much greyer??

Hi David,

Good question. Imaging in H-alpha tends to be with monochrome cameras as the Sun is being imaged in only one wavelength 656.3nm. All the raw images are in greyscale. Any colour you see has been added, aesthetically, by the imager during processing. The colours by each imager reflect how they perceive the features of the Sun are best enhanced and pleasing to the eye.
