Laser Pointers

DONT point them at aircraft -

Grimsby Telegraph - "A CLEETHORPES man will appear in court after shining a laser into the Humberside Police helicopter while it was responding to an emergency call.

The 26-year-old has been charged with endangering an aircraft at about 10pm on September 22.

A Humberside Police spokesman said the crew of Oscar 99 were attending a job near Grant Thorold Park when they experienced a series of bright green flashes which illuminated the inside of aircraft, putting them in danger.

The male, who was shining the light from the bedroom of a property below, was arrested by officers on the ground."

Never ceases to astonish me, just how stupid some people can be.

If this behaviour is indicative of their IQ, then I marvel that they can figure out how to switch it on.

Ron.

Well: Slightly different:

We have had similar incidents on the Railway, Drivers being dazzled by lasers from teenagers standing on footbridges over the train tracks, does not have the same impact as aircraft, but still very dangerous, especially at high speed.

I have a pretty high powered green laser pointer. It'd be a shame if it was banned, I use it mainly for astronomy.

I'd take issue with the "endangering an aircraft" point, by the time the beam hits an aircraft it will be very wide and diffuse.

But that doesn't excuse the numpty who did it, and I hope they throw the book at him.

Pointing them at car drivers, like we have had round here seems to me to be the worst thing, and most likely to cause an accident.

I think the thing to understand about vandals is that they are dim and unsuccessful. They can't make anything so they make their little mark by breaking things instead. They know no other way to make themselves 'present' in the world. Teaching in a deprived area for half a lifetime gave me the chance to think about this more than I might have wished to.

Nothing to do with lasers but for general vandalism the one thing that works is to clean it up instantly. This was the policy of a head we had, Tom King, and did it ever work.

Living near an airport, I don't use one either. Even though it wouldn't be used to point in the direction of any aircraft I don't want to tempt any accusations. Neither do I want any local delinquents that happen to be watching the beam getting interested/attracted to its source.

You have a good point Mike. These simpletons are like moths, and will be curious to find the source of the magic light, and the treasure they may find there.

Excellent!!

Also not much use for showing kids the sky because they always find the ruddy laser more interesting!

Olly

BTW, am I the only one who is always, always, losing his laser for months at a time?

I'm always losing my torch. Just bought a new CREE-XP-G based flashlight, used it once and now it's gone! I expect I'll find it again when we move house.

Best,

Mike

Of all the aircraft to shine a laser pointer at. This guy sounds too stupid and childish for prison.

Send him to his room without any dinner and ground him for a month with no tv etc.

I can see these being banned soon, damm it.

A fine tool for showing people the stars, even using as a finder, but we will lose to these idiots.

They should stop selling them and only have specialist astro dealers sell them under license.

Rant over

These idiots (are largely in the majority in some areas of the UK) won't care if you need a license or not - they'll get them and misuse them anyway.

I'm actually thinking of getting a green laser for when I'm next at the in-laws. They have a reasonably dark sky (several magnitudes higher than my own garden just a few miles away) and a laser would help point out objects rather than just standing over their shoulder.

Anyway, I only know a few objects so a tutorial from me doesn't last very long :o
