That thing that looks like an AP mount?

More like a Tak EM400

Big mounts/big scopes/ longer focal length. The tracking will need to be good. Will be interesting to see if they publish PE data or just give loads of guff on goto accuracy. The price will be more interesting still! If they can manage sub +/- 10 arcsecs PE priced at under £3000 they have a winner!!

Let's see on the eqmod front

Maybe we will get a visit from Mr Shillito with some comments?

It will be interesting to see what Skywatcher will offer on the software front, however they would have to put a serious development effort in to even come close to what EQMOD offers

EQmod is unlikely to work with this mount, having encoders its unlikely to have steppers.

Actually, it is quite common to have encoders attached to stepper motors such that the position will be tracked if you manually move the axis with the brake off, and the motor de-energised.

We will have to wait to find what drive the mount will have but Im pretty certain it will be servo motor, direct drive would be a bonus and would be a huge step technology wise.

EQmod in its present form would not work with either of the above drive methods and would have to be re-written probably from scratch.

As said Im sure Chris will comment soon.

It does look like rather like the IEQ45 and has adopted the AP equatorial angle system as well. Very interesting. Looking good.

The EQ6 can carry scopes with more focal length than it can accurately guide so I really hope they've worked hard on that with the new one.

Great scoop, Nick.

I'm sure a total re-write isn't necessary. Just an new control dll.

If Synta/Skywatcher attach any value to the benefit EQMOD support of their mounts then the way forward is simple. All they have to do is supply mounts, technical details of the mount control system (including protocol), and a contribution to cover development costs.

Without Synta/Skywatcher support then the problem will be finding those who are both capable and suitably motivated to set about reverse engineering the EQ7.

Perhaps if those showing interest in this new mount ask Skywatcher directly about EQMOD support then they just might consider opening up a dialog with the EQMOD developers (something that has yet to happen in nearly 4 years of EQMOD development).

Chris.
