How long for un-guided dslr imaging

Hi all, not sure if this has been asked before but would like to know if anyone out there knows how long you would image with a dslr on a standard camera tripod using a 18-55 mm lens and a 55-200 mm lens with a nikon d40? Thanks for any advice

It sort of depends, but at 18mm, you can maybe get away with 25 to 30 seconds. At 50mm, it's about 8 seconds... I've not tried beyond that focal length.

Have a go with this.

I do feel the times are a little optimistic for most images because the times apply to the center of the frame. A very wide field may give a slight trail on one side. If you understand what I mean. If not say so and I'll get back.
