X5 barlow with F15 scope

Recommended Posts

I'm considering ways of gathering funds for a possible Mak purchase :blob10:

Would a X5 barlow provide too higher mag for sensible use whilst imaging the planets using a DMK webcam and a Skymax 180? (and breathe)

Cheers

Massively .... f/75 is 2 - 3 times as much as you need. A good 2x barlow used with a DMK camera on an f/15 scope will give you sufficient image scale to capture all the detail that the objective can resolve. Going beyond that gives you a bigger image, which will be fainter, therefore require a longer exposure, giving the turbulent atmosphere more of a chance to wreak havoc.

Actually, on most planetary cameras you need something between F/20 to F/30, and the latter only on objects with high surface brightness, like Venus, Mars, or Jupiter (at a pinch). This is why I have 2x and 3x TeleXtenders for my F/10 scope. On an F/15 you need a 1.5x and 2x at most. 3x yields F/45 which is rather high (perhaps you could get away with this on Mars, but I do not think it would help).
