Looking through some config files thre are values for Gamma which is also none user controlled, but if there is a value there must be something going on..

could gain be threshold?

Earl.....you dont by any chance have some more of this stuff for long exposure control do you?;)...not that i have a clue as to what its all about mind....but it does look cool:p

I'm sure someone on here will will turn all that into a push here dummy slider control for the likes of me:)
