Traditionally it is a tube with a lens in it that doubles the magnification of any eyepiece you slot into it. These days you can get different step-ups in magnificaiton depending on the barlow purchased. Some types give you 2.5x, 3x or 4x the magnifcation. Hope that helps

Hi.

A barlow is a device doubling or tripling the magnification of a ep depending on the focal length of your scope. For example, I have a 102mm refractor with a focal length of 500mm, so if I use a 25mm without using a barlow, that gives me 500/25=20x magnification. If I used the same ep with a 2x barlow, It would make the image 40x bigger, so effectively you have two eps using a barlow.

They are very useful; I would recommend a Tal barlow from FLO, I have one myself and they are £35.
