what's the largest short tube u can mount on a camera tripod?

Recommended Posts

I've had this tripod and head and while the tripod is OK the head isn't very good. It would handle say a 90mm Mak or SkyWatcher 80ST refractor though. you'd be much better off spending a bit more for something like this. Much stronger tripod and the head while not great is at least usable. It's about 3.5Kg. It's about the cheapest decent setup around and would handle a bigger scope or even large observation bins.

A decent fluid video head or a Manfrotto 410 geared head would make it much better, but there's another £75.00 to £135.00.

I've been through several tripod and head combinations and have now settled on a Manfrotto 475B tripod and Manfrotto 405 geared head, but that would set you back about £450.00 :p

In theory up to the max load of the tripod, But the balance would be hard to sort out and swinging the scope around could be fatal ( for the scope) The weak point would be the platform where the camera would sit. I certainly wouldn't put any scope more than a couple of kilos on it, say about a 1/4 to 1/3 the quoted load.

I have used a cheap tripod with a 80mm Startravel type of scope, it was OK at low powers.
