recently bought old motorized eq5 skywatcher head ,the r a adjuster had some slight play in it. after a clean ,regrease and adjust almost all play has gone although the brass worm gear is held in place by washers /packers and o rings, could these be replaced with a proper bearing race like the newer heads,no idea of the size to look for. many thanks.

The worms on the EQ5 can have the bearings replaced with ball bearings, but it's not a straight swap-over; machining is involved for one solution at least. Here's links to show how it's done. A discussion on improving the EQ5 - IceInSpace and http://www.iceinspace.com.au/63-432-0-0-1-0.html
