SOLIGOR MT800

Hi, I don't know if this is the right forum to post this but I wondered if anyone knows if the SOLIGOR MT800 8" telescope is any good? Im new to astronomy and thought this scope looked good (on paper) but im not sure?

Any coments would be great.

Never heard of that make and to be blunt I would avoid it altogether.

What type of scope are you looking for and of course a rough idea of your budget.

There will be plenty of advise for you on here to help you spend your money

Just an observation here Mike.

Sounds like you have £500/£600 to spend on a scope?

If so PM Steve (one of our dealers) he will give you sound advice

plus i am sure he could sort you out with a scope of the same apature

only it will be a tried and trusted brand.(for roughly the same money)

I am thinking of the 8" Skywatcher and HEQ5 mount great scope by all accounts.

Hi thanks for the advice, I would be looking to spend about £500 or so, I don't want to buy something I would be dissapointed with. I am interested in trying astro photography - deep space stuff, nedula etc, so thought an 8 inch scope would be good. The SOLIGOR was a scope I saw in the window of Jacobs photography along with a few Meade telescopes.

Don't know much about Soligor scopes, they used to be big in photography lenses until Tamron and Vivitar came along in the 1970's . Maybe the name is the only link, but the the photo lenses were a cheap alternative to the manufactures own brand and the performance was ok, not great, just ok IMHO. I would be very careful and consider trying one out first before parting with hard earned cash.

Soligor is a German distributor of optical and electronic products from the Far East. Their astro telescopes used to be bog standard models from GSO in Taiwan. I think that's probably where the MT800 comes from.

Thank you all for your views, I will take your advice and look at something else rather than risk it. Think I to will look at the 8" Skywatcher like Jamie.

I'm also a newcomer to astronomy, and I purchased the 8" Skywatcher just before christmas last year, and I can tell you, you're going to be more than happy with it, you won't be disappointed.... 8)
