visual/ dob group interest?

I can see a good use for a separate dob group. It would be possible to collect all the relevant details about upgades, fixes, accessories and neat tricks all into one area.

The trouble with the forum format is that these things fade into the past so quickly and get forgotten about, new people don't even know that this stuff exists unless they get made into a sticky.

Martyn.

P.S. I don't even have a Dob but think it would be a good idea to have a specialist group.

Well there's a Tal owners group, a Skymax 127 owners group, and a Classic/Vintage scope owners group. What's everyone got against dobs owners? Are we the Volvo owning caravan towers of the astronomy world or something?

I think it's a good idea cos we can discuss things that other groups can't. For example we can see more than you lot, we've got more (dare I say) "scope" for mods than other groups, and we get more exercise cos we carry around heavier scopes than everyone else (we're also a lot bigger so watch it lol).

Plus anyone without a dob won't want to join us anyway (unless they were considering getting one). So what's the problem chum? hehehe

That's my feeling too. The general forum area is okay but posts slip out of sight so quickly.

We do have a search facility - which is quite good. If a group becomes really busy then posts will fall away very quickly as well.

Bang on !!

Exactly why the Tal group was started. There's a wealth of very useful info spread far about on the web(and on these excellent pages), so having links to them all in the one place, hopefully will makes things easier/convenient. 'Talscopes yahoo group' is a wealth of info, but hasn't been properly maintained in years, so stuff is buried within menus, submenus etc.

Cheers,

Andy.

how about a separate dob section within the forum instead of a group, imaging have one, deep sky have one etc...but there arent any purely for scope types. i know when i first started i only had experience with refractors and dobs are a different beast altogether, it took ages to find the info i needed. Yes we can post on the help and open discussion forums but the posts and threads are all over the place; by grouping a dob section beginners and experienced observers alike can have a one stop section for their questions and answers...

10" dob owner here i think it's a good idea count me in. It's hard to get members of the fourm to talk just about dob's.There are a few tweek,s i would like to do to my dob,Iv'e just flocked mine but i would have liked to have opinions before i started from other dob owners

Well I have a dob, but I also have a frac. I have a Volvo estate but no caravan, will a tent do ? I have a left eye, but also a right, but I only observe with my left eye as I have an astigmatism in the right eye. That takes in most of the options

Seriously though I think a group is a good idea, not only for sharing tips etc but also to judge just how many dob owners there are out there. Maybe in numbers we could convince some enterprising engineer out there to manufacture some useful items.

Like reasonably priced EQ platforms, after all, why should our cousins across the Atlantic have all the fun ?

Good idea - let the Dob owners have their own group if they want to talk about dustbins on teflon rollers thats cool - us EQ mount owners wont be bothered by all this talk of teflon and having to listen to the newbie dob owners whingeing about how hard it is to track a planet.

Us EQ owners can then mount a surpise coup d'etat :icon_eek: and take over while the dob owners discuss teflon and nylon screw fixings :D

Errm sorry to be pedantic but if it was on an EQ then it wouldnt be a Dob would it ? ;)
