Observing & learning about the MOON

There are several really good books on the subject.

For a good beginners guide to the more interesting lunar features 'Discover the Moon' by Lacroux and Legrand provides a great night-by night guide that is, IMHO, unsurpassed.

'The Moon and How to Observe' it by Peter Gergo, is another good text but with greater background to the processes that formed the features.

For a feature by feature guide Rukl's 'Atlas of the Moon' is the best. However, whilst the maps are superb, the text on each feature is not very long or in depth. plus it's out of print (i.e. very expensive).

For a comprehensive guide to lunar geomorphology IMHO you can't beat Charles Wood's 'A Modern Moon'.

The free software 'Virtual Moon Atlas' is superb and is well worth the very large download.

I hope this helps.

I've bought a number of lunar observing books (and got rid of some) but here are three I've kept.

Observing the Moon: The Modern Astronomer's Guide by Gerald North

Great practical guide to observing the Moon covering lunar geology and techniques of lunar observations, drawing and imaging etc. Highly recommended.

Observing the Moon (Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)

Another good book covering everything from lunar geology to imaging and drawing. Has a CD-ROM with lunar images.

Exploring The Moon Through Binoculars and Small Telescopes

Essentially a day by day observing guide, and a little bit dated now (last revised in 1984), but still useful.
