Out of interest does anyone know how far we have got with naming (numbering stars) - down to what magnitude?

LOL. Siriusly though i named my dog Chara. It sounded better then Beetlejuice.

I got one of these from a relative a couple of years ago as a novelty present. It states in the documentation that it is a novelty item, nothing more nothing less, and they're clearly sold as such.

I do appreciate however that some people who do not pursue astronomy as a hobby could very well be misled into thinking they've got something more than they actually have.

Needless to say I didn't bother naming my star. Mine did come with quite a good quality star chart and the tin it all came in aint bad either, so it wasn't a total waste!

As far as I can remember it was to advise people that no private organization or company can name a Star, this was the prerogative of the World Governing body, or words to that effect.
