Solar Activity 13 Jun

Bad forecast today - heavy showers - but in fact it wasn't too bad, dry & bright with some sunny intervals. Seeing was horrid though.

The Sun's activity is simpler today - one row of proms and three areas of activity on the disc surface. The prominences are all in a row in the north eastern sector.

1131 UT. Solarscope 60, 2.5x Powermate, DMK21 - three frame mosaic.

Associated with the southernmost group there is an area of activity rounding the limb:

1129 UT. Solarscope 60, 2.5x Powermate, DMK21. Rather clumsy composite image....

1142 UT. Lunt 60mm, B1200 CaK diagonal, 2.5x Powermate, DMK21

AR 11080 & AR 11079 in the south west no longer have spots visible in white light (perhaps they would if the seeing was better). I caught an eruption from AR 11079 right on the limb:

Meanwhile, AR 11081 approaching the north west limb continues active:

Finally the CaK overview:

Transparency very good when the sun shone through large gaps in mid level cloud. Seeing very poor with smearing and considerable boiling. Temperature 17C, wind NW force 2-3.

I ordered some of that Baader solar film you recommended when i asked you for advice on solar imaging a few weeks back, it turned up Sat morning, and i made a filter that night. Unfotunately, its been bucketing it down all day so i havent had a chance to have a look see yet!, i will stick some images up if i get any tommorow for you to scrutinise!

Just out of curiosity, how long have you been solar imaging and have you noticed any change in the amount of activity on the Sun since you started, it seems looking at your images that there is quite a lot of solar activity and i wondered if this was normal?

That figures .... I have a SF-100 filter (£8K) on order, when it arrives I expect not to see the sun for 6 months ...

About two years. Still learning.

There is more activity recently but it's still poor compared with what I'd expect at this stage of the solar cycle. The great thing about hydrogen alpha narrowband solar filters is that there's always something going on... a few quiescent prominences and/or filaments if nothing in the way of white light active areas.

Very nice as usual Brian. I was really enjoying that sunspot group yesterday, looked great in white light.
