Beulah once you've been to a star party you'll be wanting to attend as many as possible. I'm sure you will be like I was, nervous and apprehensive, however the people are great and you will soon feel at home.

Thanks :)

I have been to a few star parties before held by the local Astro group...they tended to be smaller. I have also met many members of forums over the years, some of which our off-screen friendships have endured.

So yeah you are spot on sir, I am wondering why I feel a little apprehensive about the SGL party...despite that, I have grown fond of everyone on here in the year I have been a member.

Hi Beulah,

I went to a meeting of my local astronomical society - other than the treasurer, not a single one of them said hello. After a few abortive attempts to strike up a conversation I decided they were not the sort of group I was looking for.

This will be my third SGL star party and in between I've been to Kelling with a bunch of SGLers three times. On all six occasions I have had a truly wonderful time.

In the flesh, so to speak, you'll find everyone just as friendly as they are on the forum. I'd be shocked if there was even one person who would not welcome you having a peep through their telescope or having a look at the images they were creating.

If it is cloudy, we have just as good a time socialising and having a really good laugh at how silly we must look, sitting in a field in the dark waiting for the clouds to go away.

You'll have a great time.

Mike

Bang on there Mike - I had a couple of bad experiences with astro societies too one of which said 'oh we dont do observing - we do proper astronomy' :) you have to wonder how far their 'proper' astronomy would get without someone, somewhere providing observational data.

They were pretty unfriendly so I hopped it :hello2:

The Star Parties are great, people are friendly and you can have a look at other peoples gear and see what you like. Dont be afraid of having perhaps a small telescope and wondering oif you will be snubbed - it wont happen.

Your more than welcome to come have a look through any of the kit I will have with me and if your lost in the sky ask someone else cos my sky navigation is hopeless  thats why I have GoTo :headbang:

The pitches with electricity are going quickly. There are plenty available for Thursday night but we are down to 20 for Friday night and 19 for Saturday night. There are plenty of non-electric pitches.

As they say .... book now to avoid being disappointed. :)

It's my first star party, Iam starting to get excited now, I can't wait! We will have to sort out the logistics, we have a different car, but also the scope, Iam hoping to make a travel box for it this weekend. All part of the fun I suppose. Iam looking forward to meeting you all.

The site has a small shop. It does not have a very big range of items but you can get essentials.

I intend to take food with me and just use the shop for stuff I forget.

Wot no pancakes!!!! I can feel myself wasting away, I may have to resign from the "Ample Astronomers" :):headbang:

Slippery, what do you need?

Let us know as were taking the caravan this year and have a spare 8 man Khyam tent plus all the usual camping gear like gas stove, air bed etc. I can easily put it in the caravan and take it with us if you want to borrow it.

Cheers mate! Your are a true gent, I have my own tent sleeping bag etc, but I may have to borrow an airbed if possible! Also are there any rules reference Hookups on the site? As some sites demand the artic yellow cable or blue and some say you must have rcd's etc? I may just buy an extension from Ebay but need to know that it conforms to site rules?

Never mind site rules mate.....Look after your health, you're only going to get one chance (if that) with a dodgy flea bay cable.

Spend the dosh and get the safe verified version.

I wouldn't, a normal extention lead laying on a dewed grass you are asking for trouble. Get a proper artic cable extention with RCD built in.
