Absolutley you can...

The mod improves the response to Ha and gives more benefit on Nebs than galaxies... although you will "enhance" the Ha forming regions of the closer ones for the vast majority there will be little or no benefit...

I don't follow the more subs required with an unmodded cam argument for galaxies, or clusters for that matter ... unless its to bring out the Ha regions...

You most certainly can. I have imaged M74, M81, M101 with an unmodded Canon 400D and the results were ok. Like mentioned by Billy, the responce in HA is the problem, but you can still get some fantastic results.
