Erecting eyepiece vs barlow?

Hi, A quick question, I wanted to magnify my prime focus setup for some more interesting photos but when I tried the 1.5x Erecting eyepiece that came with the telescope I couldn't see anything, totally blurred and dark with and without the diagonal piece added. So my question is will this change if I buy a barlow or are they the same and it's something I'm doing wrong. Thanks in advance! Paul
