No you will only see the bright core with a small size scope. You will be able to make out some of the dark lanes on a dark skies site with a larger scope. M31 is a very large object so in order to fit it full extent in the field of view you will need low magnification

Shame, I know, but the tiny refractor that took this is about the size of the finderscope on its neighbour, a 20 inch Dob. At the Dob on a good night with M31 high, you can see about 2/3 of the galactic width seen here. The two principle dust lanes show easily but there is no other detail on show, really, and the view is monochromatic. But there is something spooky about the live view...
