NGC 457 - corkscrew or owl?

Recommended Posts

I was exploring my way round Cassiopeia last night and spent quite a long time looking at NGC 457 as I had such a good clear view of it. I was really struck by how the shape reminded me of a corkscrew - one of those double-lever types like this:

Anyway. Just now I looked the cluster up on Google and found somebody out there with a great imagination for open clusters. Have a look at this: Visual Impressions of Bright Open Clusters in the Milky Way

Me too, ET or Spaceman.

Interesting that 457 wasn't really commented on much by any of the "classic" observers (who obviously knew of it) and has only become "famous" in recent decades.

One of the few objects that actually seems to have benefited from light pollution, which makes the stickman effect more prominent.
