Coronal Mass Ejections

Recommended Posts

Caught the always excellent Radio 4 Science progamme, Material World, driving home tonight.

The progamme started off by discussing Coronal Mass Ejections (CME), first recognised by what apparently may have been the strongest solar storm ever in 1859. It was the first time that a connection was made between the interaction of the sun with the earth's magnetic field and the northern lights and electrically powered machines, which in those days would be limited to Dynamos and the victorian internet (i.e. the telegraph). One telegraph operator was injured when his machine caught fire as a direct result of the CME.

The programme can be downloaded as a podcast from here:-
