I'm using app that says deep sky camera

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I am new in this forum and to the astronomical topic.I'm using something called Deep Sky camera and I don't know what I'm seeing.

I inserted several photos which I increased the pixels. One of them is a screenshot of an enlargement of one of them.

Hi @Jennifer ag and welcome to SGL. :hello2:

Can you provide more info? i.e. date, time, location, position in sky, etc.

That said, it looks like my first image of Mars from July 2003 when, I handheld a digital compact camera over my telescope eyepiece.

Don't be deceived into thinking that mobile phones can do anything and everything. An app claiming to turn one into a deep sky camera is ridiculous. A deep sky camera looks like this:

But, with adjusted expectations, why not have a go.

One of the easiest ways of identifying what you are looking at in the night sky is with the use of a planetarium. Today we are really lucky to some excellent electronic planetariums such as Stellarium. Stellarium is a programme which is completely free and will run on windows or apple computers (desktop or laptop). It is also available as an app for phones but tbh I would avoid this,  firstly it is not free,  secondly it doesn't have the full functionality offered by the desktop/laptop version. So I would encourage you to follow this link below, download the most appropriate version for you, and set in your location. Once you have your location set you can use the menu controls to go to whatever date in the past or future you wish and you will be presented with an accurate view of the night sky. You should be able to use that to confirm the identity of what you have seen. Good luck hunting :)

Here's the view Stellarium gives looking to the west from your location at 1850 today.  As others have said, Mars looks the most likely candidate.

Is there no longer a free app version of Stellarium?  I downloaded free versions of SkySafari and Stellarium onto my iPhone to try them out, but that was awhile ago (and I eventually purchased SkySafari+).

Anyway, based on the pic posted, I'll vote for Mars as well.

I think stellariaum mobile is about £1.50 from play store even at £5 it's cheap for what you get , some of the sky safari packages are in the £100s

What Sky Safari packages are in the £100s?  I have recently upgraded mine to SS 7 plus and it was was around 14 dollars.  ( I only upgraded it to enable its use with Starsense Explorer)

I've never heard of any SS package being more than around 25 dollars.  Have I missed something?
