Would a DIY EQ or VNS Platform be possible at -27 Latitude?

I was planning on making a EQ Platform for my 8inch Dob, but a couple people told me (Some forum don't remember where) since I'm located in Brisbane (-27Latitude) that a EQ platform may not be the best and I should look into a VNS Platform instead. just wondering what the difference performance wise between the two, and if either will work fine. 

I am currently looking at the This Reddit Post & This Thread for instructions. The reddit post is located in Australia as well but at 35^oS. 

Also if I were to do this, is their any recommended software's to do this in? Ideally Free
