M27 Dumbbell Nebula

Recommended Posts

After a bit of a break mostly due to bad weather over the past months, I finally set everything up again last week and went for M27.

As I have to use the Asiair all-sky polar alignment I seemed to spend ages trying to get things honed in. In the end I just plate solved and synched and the alignment seems to have been good enough for the whole session.

Think I managed just over a couple of hours of data (180s subs). I then had some problems with the new WBPP in Pixinsight which kept overlaying three enormous bands of colour over the final image! Having disabled Cosmetic Correction and retaking my flats and darks it finally seemed to work.

I'm due to retire shortly so am hoping I'll get more time to look up at the skies!dumbell_nebula_August24_2(1).thumb.jpg.9d34df1a0aea7d336b4b9dbccd3751c2.jpg

Good tight data. I would try, though, in processing to give a gentler stretch to the main part of the nebula because it is losing contrast and colour when stretched as hard as this.

Thanks...I think I was a bit focused on bringing out the faint nebulosity around the edge. Maybe next time I would use a better mask to protect the centre.
