Venus As The 2024-25 Evening Star

Recommended Posts

Brilliant Venus has commenced its apparition in the western sky after sunset following its superior conjunction behind the Sun on 2024 JUN 04.

For observers north of the tropics, this is one of the better of the five Venus evening apparitions in the eight-year cycle. Venus will be getting higher each evening after sunset until late January. Then it will peak in brilliance during mid-February, followed by a dive toward the horizon into mid-March.

Photos and descriptions of Venus during this apparition would be welcome additions to this thread.

This is something to look forward to, and it will also be a good target before dark, as long as you can solve the problems of keeping the sun off your scope and actually finding the planet in daylight.

Actually, it is really easy to spot Venus with a finderscope at daylight as it is quite bright. From my experience, imaging at daylight and with the sun high up is much better and more stable. I am really looking forward to Jan and onwards as the current position is too close to the sun for comfort.

Found Venus with 15x56 binos near 1950hrs, then took this photo just before it dropped below my local horizon near 2007hrs this evening.
