Reflectix application.

Recommended Posts

I am just getting ready to wrap my 180 Maksutov with Reflectix insulation. How many layers is best one or two? I have wrapped a 70cm heater strap around the meniscus lens and intend to cover this leaving just the white band clear to fit a standard dew shield. Is there anything that I need to be aware of before starting? Thanks.

Good move.

Definitely two layers 👍

And cover the back as much as possible.

Yes I am going to cover the back as you say but I want to wait for its first light to check the collimation with a star test. Thanks.

I covered my 180 MC with a layer of a Reflectix-like material, a thin camping mat ( dense foam backing with reflective layer on one side). since I do not like the shiny looks of this material, I've put a second layer on top, a black yoga mat. I left the primary mirror cell exposed since it is much thicker than the thin walled tube of the OTA and does not radiate heat as much. This took care of any potential heat plumes inside the scope. The dew shield is also in black foam and slides over the heating strap around the meniscus cell.
