Is there a simple method to add spikes in post processing using Affinity or similar?

I am likely to try the 'wire spider' method on a future go at M44 but wondered if there were any PP methods too.

Short stack here, will try for a longer run next time to get more colour

I have a recollection that one of the Action suites for PhotoShop (Noel Carboni or Annie's Astro Actions) used to include an Action to add spikes.

Startools has a synthetic diffraction spike option - but you would have to buy the software. However, there is a free trial so you could give it a go first to see what you think of the results.
